Artist’s Statement

I have been playing with fiber and fiber arts since I was a small child. My mother is a weaver and jeweler and I got to play with her yarns and fabrics at her feet. As I grew older, I worked in my mother’s craft store and helped her at craft fairs. Although my career and studies took me in other directions, the fiber arts are center to who I am.

In more recent years, I have focused on painting silk with dyes and integrating them into various art forms. The most recent direction has been to incorporate fabrics and felting and I am currently working on a series of origami fabric folding mixed with felting.

The fiber arts have endless possibilities. I am fascinated with design, exploring the different elements and understanding how color, form and function integrate together. I often have a general idea of where I want to go with a piece, but prefer the experience of surprise. I try not to force any concept and let it evolve in front of me, only using my general ideas to help shape direction. I love the challenge of figuring out how to finish the design to bring in balance and harmony with a bit of humor.

I currently work out of my home studio in Middle Grove, NY. I offer workshops and studies in a variety of fiber arts techniques, including designing, dyeing and feltmaking.
